Outdoor Odyssey Award:
We’ve recently completed an exciting and rewarding project, in designing the badge for the newly established ‘Fairfield Outdoor Odyssey Award’.
The award, exclusive to Fairfield Prep School in Loughborough, offers a curriculum that combines bushcraft skills with environmental education – allowing pupils to learn about, and experience the great outdoors from their on-site Forest School.
All the fun of the forest
Children aged 3-11 can take part in the award. So, we designed the badge to reflect this audience with a fun, friendly and adventurous feel – its circular form and illustrative style is inspired by classic Cub Scout and Girl Guide award badges.
With its slightly wobbly edges, earthy colour palette and a typeface which looks as though its been hand-carved, we’ve created a badge that provides a natural, woodland feel, whilst also having a playful, childlike nature – the perfect combination for this award!
A nice, subtle design detail is that the shapes of the three colourful trees within the badge have been created using simplified ‘O.O.A.’ letter forms taken from the words ‘Outdoor Odyssey Award’.
Explore, Learn, Protect
To accompany the badge we divised a simple and memorable three word strapline ‘Explore, Learn, Protect’.
These three words form a motto which helps to communicate the Outdoor Learning and Eco-awareness aspects of the award. Pupils’ undertaking the award will be… Exploring the Outdoors, Learning about the Outdoors and most importantly, discovering ways to Protect the Outdoors.
The design for the Outdoor Odyssey Award has been very well received, with lots of positive feedback from the School, course-leaders, parents and pupils.
