As part of the 5.3 million refurbishment and newbuild we were commissioned to create way finding signage reflect the original 1920's building, and graphics to add visual interest and personality to the library interior.
The Thinking
A Penguin Book jacket inspired theme is used for the way finding signage, the combination of colour and very easy to read typography works extremely well. To add personality to the interior we created unique pieces of artwork for each bookcase header, these were created by using close-up details from book jackets that are contained within the library. The visual themes reflect the subject areas that they sit within.
The Result
The interior has received an amazing response from both staff and public. On the first Saturday of opening 6,500 people visited the library, with over 4,500 issues (items being loaned), quite a contrast to the usual 1,200 issues on a Saturday. Obviously it would be expected to see an increase in visitors and issues on the first day, however the library continues to be very successful with new joiners and issues being significantly above average.
